Heisenberg Cubes

Mystery of the German Uranium Cube is a history of science project undertaken by Koeth and colleague Dr. Miriam Hiebert, which is seeking to trace the meandering path of a 5 pound block of natural uranium that landed in Koeth’s hands in 2013. Koeth and Hiebert have written a cover article in Physics Today and have since gained strong public interest in determining its origins and final disposition. On August 29th NPR’s Morning Edition aired an interview with Koeth & Hiebert.

In 2023, Dr. Hiebert released her new book The Uranium Club: Unearthing the Lost Relics of the Nazi Nuclear Program, chronicling both the Nazi’s failed attempts to build an atomic bomb during World War II and her and Dr. Koeth’s globe-spanning journey to track down what remains of this historic program. It can be found on Amazon and other places where books are sold.

This cube of Uranium metal was used in the failed WWII German Nuclear Reactor Experiments. It is seen in a display case next to a photograph of that very cube and 663 more like it, which appears in Werner Heisenberg’s text Nuclear Physics.
