Heisenberg Cubes

Mystery of the German Uranium Cube is a history of science project undertaken by Koeth and colleague Dr. Miriam Hiebert, which is seeking to trace the meandering path of a 5 pound block of natural uranium that landed in Koeth’s hands in 2013. Koeth and Hiebert have written a cover article in Physics Today and have since gained strong public interest in determining its origins and final disposition. On August 29th NPR’s Morning Edition aired an interview with Koeth & Hiebert.

This cube of Uranium metal was used in the failed WWII German Nuclear Reactor Experiments. It is seen in a display case next to a photograph of that very cube and 663 more like it, which appears in Werner Heisenberg’s text Nuclear Physics.
